Demography and society in China China experienced a rapid demographic transition partly driven by population policies implemented from the 1950s. It is now characterized by a very low fertility and a decline in mortality, which caused a reversal of the age structure. In a context of economic transition, these trends pose significant social challenges, in particular because of the development of small families, population aging and demographic masculinization. However, demographic and social changes are not uniform throughout the country. Some population groups, particularly among ethnic minorities, require to qualify the general pattern of China’s demographic transition. This project analyzes the demographic and social developments of Chinese population in China and outside China, in a context of social and economic inequalities.
