Abstract

Must the population of Africa go on growing rapidly for decades to come, or will it at last begin to follow the pattern of demographic change already observed in other continents? And if the latter, when, how, and at what speed will the transition to low fertility and low mortality occur?

This book seeks to provide answers to these questions by examining the situation in one particular African country, Senegal. Senegal was chosen because of the abundance of national and local level population data. These data are employed here to produce the most up-to-date and complete work of synthesis on demographic change in Senegal and its prospects for the future.
